The Children’s Navigator is a full-time position and is a contact for children seeking services at the Palomar. The Children’s Navigator has a unique and important role in client care with children who have been exposed or witness to, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking and elder abuse. The Children’s Navigator builds rapport with children and their families, identifies needs, solves problems, supports and empowers children while their caregivers access services at Palomar. The Children’s Navigator reduces barriers that keep clients from getting timely services throughout the system by coordinating wraparound care for emotional, financial, administrative or cultural support, all in partnership with the caregiver’s team. Client confidentiality and privacy of information is critical.
Essential Functions
Provide warm welcome and guidance to all clients and children and accompanying persons upon arrival;
Assess children’s immediate and long term needs;
Provide trauma-informed and child appropriate crisis intervention as needed;
Conduct initial intake/assessment of trauma (if necessary), identify client’s needs, help them prioritize and navigate through the resources available thorough partner agencies at Palomar, connect client with community partners to meet stated need(s);
Assure ease of movement among and between services, work with navigators and other adult service providers to coordinate care in the best interest of the family;
Maintain a safe, welcoming, clean and comfortable reception area and playroom, ensure immediate services for health and safety needs are available and accessible to clients as needed;
Apply creative problem solving as needed;
Track and document client movement through services;
In cases where children have been directly impacted by violence, provide the caregiver information on victim’s rights and victims compensation benefits; review information with clients to ensure they understand, and answer any questions that may arise;
Provide appropriate communications, connections and follow-up with onsite service agencies and the clients to assure high customer satisfaction;
Distribute and retain service satisfaction surveys from child’s caregiver;
Identify gaps in resources and work to remediate them;
Develop and maintain up-to-date resource list;
Assist the Children’s Sanctuary Manager to train and oversee interns and volunteers in child development;
Build/maintain working relationships and trust with clients, FJC agency partners and community resource providers.
Position Requirements and Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in child development, social work, psychology, or a related field, or 4 years of experience in a related field;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite and Salesforce programs. Other technology proficiencies may be required;
Knowledge of best practices relating to children exposed to trauma and trauma informed care and confidentiality;
Knowledge of community resources to clients in need of specific immediate services (both on-site and off-site partners) and resources, including shelters and housing, counseling and treatment options;
Maintain a high level of professional and ethical conduct towards clients, staff and the community.
Maintain and promote a philosophy of customer service consistent with the goals of Palomar. Be sensitive to client service issues and flexible enough to respond to the needs of individual clients.
Must be sensitive to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the service population as well as coworkers.
Ability to effectively meet with and engage the public; ability to establish effective working relationships with supervisor, employees, onsite and offsite partners and the general public;
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
Ability to handle stressful situations;
Flexibility and problem solving skills and experience.
Must successfully pass a background check.
The ability to work in a fast paced environment, conflict resolution skills and solution-focused problem solving is a must.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and work at a computer for long periods of time in an office environment and must be able to lift/move weight up to 25lbs. Employees are also required to accept incoming calls and must be able to hear and speak. Must have visual acuity to read and draft reports, case notes, letters, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision adequate for the incumbent to perform the responsibilities and functions of the job efficiently. Must have the manual dexterity to manually operate and use a computer. The noise level is quiet to moderate; non-smoking environment.
