OKLAHOMA CITY —
An organization known for providing services to families experiencing domestic violence is asking for donations to make sure children have a happy Halloween.
Palomar officials said they welcomed nearly 1,000 people to last year’s event, and they’re expecting similar numbers. They need donations for costumes and candy, as every kid deserves the thrill of trick or treating.
“It’s the opportunity for our children and families that we have at Palomar to be able to have a safe space to come and be as a family and get some candy, of course,” said Lindsey Cardone, director of children and family services for Palomar.
Each year, the nonprofit puts on its annual Trunk-or-Treat event, a chance for Oklahoma families experiencing domestic violence to take a moment to be silly and live freely.
“A lot of the time, our clients aren’t able to have Halloween costumes. With domestic violence, a lot of times, our families are actively fleeing, so they only have the clothes on their backs. So being able to provide a costume for our children, our teens, even some of the adults that come to our trunk or treat is really what we want to have every year,” said Cardone.
But Palomar needs costumes, lots of them. The nonprofit hopes to fill several racks, stock full of costumes for babies to adults.
They’re also in need of candy.
“We need tons. We’re going to have two different entrances this year, so we’re going to be able to have two full complete racks is what we’re gearing for,” Cardone said.
If you’re able to donate a costume or some candy, you can drop those off at Palomar, 1140 North Hudson Avenue, by next Wednesday. The Trunk-or-Treat is on Oct. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.
