Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is an intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older or vulnerable adult. The abuse often occurs at the hands of a caregiver or a person the victim trusts.

Warning Signs of Elder Abuse

  • Isolation from friends and family
  • Unexplained bruises, burns, or scars
  • Injury that has not been cared for properly
  • Appearing dirty, underfed, dehydrated, or over or under-medicated
  • Hoarding
  • Recent changes in banking or spending patterns
  • Frequent expensive gifts from vulnerable adult to caregiver

Red flags of elder abuse might be physical, behavioral, environmental, or financial. You should watch both the vulnerable adult and their caregiver for signs of abuse. If you see these signs, report to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services by calling 1-800-522-3511 or at okhotline.org/s/reportabuse.
