Palomar, Oklahoma City’s family justice center, reported a significant increase in visitors seeking protection and support during the holiday season.

“Many of those who walk through the Palomar doors are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking,” said Anden Bull, chief operating officer of Palomar. “We see people from all walks of life, so we see women, children, whole families, and we also see men.”

The holidays often bring heightened tensions, leading to more individuals seeking help.

“We see a large increase of survivors coming through our doors one to two weeks before the holidays,” Bull said. “A lot of people are trying to get protection from their families and large holiday gatherings, and then we will see a large influx of survivors a week after the holidays.”

Last year, Palomar served 5,700 people, and this year, it is on track to surpass that number.

“We see clients come through our door in all different levels of distress,” Bull said. “We may see some clients that walk in with literally only the clothes on their back. A lot of clients are fleeing with nothing but themselves and their children, so that’s why we have the Palomar shop.”

The center currently needs winter clothing for women and children, women’s undergarments, nonperishable food items, hygiene products and baby items.

“We want to make sure they have those basic essentials while they’re finding safety,” Bull said.
